OOC info!
NAME: Amelie Coombs
AGE: 24
SPECIES: Witch
BACKGROUND & HISTORY: Amelie grew up a twin in the Coombs family, which she sometimes feels doubled the pressure of being a Coombs in the first place. Not only is she expected to grow up a proper young Coombs lady, but she’s one of two people trying to do exactly the same thing. As a child, she listened patiently to her mother’s stories of the rivalry and everything she tried so hard to drill into her head, but the older she got, the more she started to tune the stories out with a smile, pretending she was listening. She had always walked a fine line between pleasing and angering her mother – a kind of fluctuation between Aoife’s quiet resignation and Moira’s rebelliousness. When their father died, she was only fifteen, and it rocked her world. They had always been close, and she fondly remembers being bounced on his knee and whispers in her ear to ignore her mother. As soon as she died, she begged her mother to send her away to school, and while she didn’t get the boarding school she wished (a Coombs must always take her place in Siren Cove), she did manage to spend most of her time on campus at high school and then college, throwing herself into schoolwork with everything she had to avoid thinking about home. She’s become exceedingly read as a result, and has graduated with honours with a degree in secondary teaching. She’s now returned full time to Siren Cove, hoping to pick up a job at one of the town’s many schools, and to hopefully reassert herself as a Coombs daughter.
PERSONALITY: Amelie has always been the louder of the sisters, more willing to laugh and dance and not care who sees her being an improper Coombs lady. She likes to have fun, and hates revelling in anything sad, which is why she’s spent so long avoiding the fact of her father. This can lead to things being bottled up which she refuses to acknowledge, and if often takes being quite stern with her to get her to admit the seriousness of a situation. She’s extremely well read and enjoys study, spending a lot of time in the town library. Amelie tends to have two sides to her – the one she presents to her mother, wherein she is very agreeable and dutiful and will nod and smile along, and the one she presents to most of the rest of the world, wherein she’s more carefree and a little quicker to voice her opinion. She can be quick to anger, especially when her family is spoken ill of, but mostly she dislikes conflict.
OPINION OF THE RIVALRY: Amelie has grown up with the rivalry drilled into her very bones, and it tires her. She’s watched it bury her twin sister in hatred, watched her older sister basically denounce the family because of it, and the whole thing just annoys her. She doesn’t like what it’s done to her family, and in all honesty, she doesn’t see what the Thorntons have ever done to her or hers. She tries not to be too friendly with too many of them though, less she end up with her head on her mother’s chopping block.
LIFESTYLE: Having graduated from college, Amelie is now a certified teacher and is hoping she can pick up a job in town. Still managing to be in her mother’s good graces (most of the time), she retains a pretty decent inheritance, which she receives in monthly instalments into her accounts. Sometimes she resents this, but she always finds her way back to the money, unable to part with the ease of it, especially on a teacher’s wage. Now that she’s back home, she’s moving back into her old room, next door to Aoife’s.
POWERS & ABILITIES: Amelie’s powers embarrass her a little, because she tends to do a bit of everything, but nothing terribly well. She likes basic little charms, things that let her light her way or decorate her room prettily, small conjurations and the like, but large magic tends to leave her exhausted. She specialises in rune magic, and is able to concentrate on creating a variety of spells if she draws them out on people or objects. In the past she’s been able to cloak a small section of a room, heal minor wounds, conjure fire and cast basic protection charms. She’s still trying to figure out this side of herself, and knows that she should probably ask Moira to help her out, but the whole idea makes her feel inferior.
